Lightweight, recreational canoes are ideal for solo paddlers.  These models are easily transported and are excellent for flat-water use.  Many paddlers use a double-ended kayak paddle when soloing in these small boats.

Sporting and recreational canoes will serve you well in a variety of activities.  They're stable and easy to paddle which makes them perfect for families that want to get out on the water for the afternoon. They are also ideal for hunters and photographers that require a steady platform and the fisherman that likes to stand and cast.

Downriver canoes are constructed with closely spaced ribs and higher bows and sterns.  These canoes are often sold with canvas coverings and are ideally suited for use in running water and rock-filled rivers, however most canoes are  available in either wood/canvas or wood/epoxy hull finishes.  Generally, canvas coverings are better for boats intended for use in running water, while epoxy is preferable for flat water conditions such as in lakes, ponds and slow moving water.

Square stern canoes cater to sportsmen and recreational paddlers alike. Based on the Adirondack guide boats, this style has been around for nearly two centuries.
